Fees & Coverage

Fees & Coverage

Let's talk about the practical stuff.

We know that cost and coverage can feel like a barrier to getting started — so we want to make this as clear and straightforward as possible.

The short version: most extended health benefit plans cover counselling services, reimbursement tends to be quick, and we make the process as easy as we can for you.

Here’s everything you need to know.

We know counselling is an investment. It’s also one of the most meaningful ones you can make — in yourself, in your relationships, and in the life you actually want to be living.

The good news: most extended health benefit plans cover a significant portion of counselling fees,
and once you submit your receipt to your insurance portal, the turn around time for your reimbursement typically comes through within just a few days.

How Payment Works

How payment works at penney murphy & associates

Payment is due at the time of your session. We accept all major credit cards as well as e-transfers.

We don’t direct bill to insurance providers — but that’s less of a hassle than it sounds.
After each session, we provide you with a detailed receipt that includes everything your insurance company needs: the date of service, the fee paid, the type of session, and your therapist’s credentials and registration number.

Most clients simply photograph or scan their receipt and upload it directly to their insurance provider’s online portal. Reimbursement typically comes through within just a few days.

The Coverage Question

The one thing worth checking before you book

Here’s something most people don’t realize until after they’ve started therapy — and we’d rather you know upfront:

Not all insurance plans cover all types of therapists.

Every insurance provider has its own requirements for which therapist credentials qualify for reimbursement. Some plans cover sessions with a Registered Psychologist only. Others cover Registered Social Workers, Registered Psychotherapists, or Canadian Certified Counsellors. Some plans cover all of the above.

Because every plan is different, we strongly recommend checking your coverage before booking — not because we want to add a step, but because we want you to get reimbursed without any surprises.

How To Check Your Coverage

How to find out what your plan covers

It’s simpler than it sounds. Here’s what to do:

Step 1 — Find your benefits information.
This is usually available through your employer’s HR portal, your insurance provider’s app or website, or on the back of your benefits card.

Step 2 — Look for your mental health or counselling benefit.
This is sometimes listed under “Paramedical Services” or “Mental Health Practitioners.” Check the maximum annual amount covered and — most importantly — which professional designations qualify.

Step 3 — Match your coverage to our team.
Our clinicians include:

  • Registered Psychologists
  • Registered Social Workers
  • Registered Counsellors
  • Canadian Certified Counsellors

Once you know which designation your plan covers, we can match you with the right therapist — and your Complimentary Connection Call is a great opportunity to confirm this before committing to anything.

Step 4 — Still not sure? Call your insurer directly.

Ask them: “Which professional designations are covered under my mental health benefit?” — that one question will give you everything you need.
